The Accademia was founded in 1750 by the Venetian Senate as Venice’s school of painting, sculpture, and architecture. It played a pioneering role in art restoration. In 1807, it was renamed the Accademia Reale di Belle Arti and relocated to its current premises under Napoleonic orders.
Following the suppression of religious congregations and Venetian magistrates, many artworks were confiscated. A selection of these masterpieces was sent to Paris for display in the Louvre Museum. In Venice, numerous paintings from the 14th to the 18th centuries were preserved by the Accademia gallery, serving as an educational collection for young artists.
The Accademia aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of Italian art by acquiring works from significant Italian schools. However, it later prioritized regional artworks in its collection.
