Agra Fort is a 16th-century Mughal fortress of red sandstone whose 2.5-kilometre enclosure walls once contained the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. Emperor Akbar began rebuilding the fort on the site of an older structure in 1565, and successive emperors, notably Shah Jahan, added palaces and pavilions in white marble alongside the earlier red sandstone buildings.
Within the walls stand structures such as the Jahangir Palace, the Khas Mahal, and the audience hall of the Diwan-i-Khas, along with two mosques. Shah Jahan was held under house arrest here by his son Aurangzeb in his final years, reportedly within sight of the Taj Mahal across the river. Agra Fort was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 under criterion (iii), recognised as exceptional testimony to Mughal civilization.
Today the fort is one of the three World Heritage properties of the Agra region, alongside the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri, and remains under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India.
