The Ahom Raja's Palace stands at Garhgaon, close to Sivasagar town in Assam, and marks the site of what was once the principal capital of the Ahom kingdom. According to the Archaeological Survey of India, the Ahom king Suklengmung, the fifteenth ruler of the dynasty, established the capital here and raised a palace of wood and other impermanent material in 1540 CE. Subsequent rulers reinforced the settlement: king Pramatta Singha added masonry fortifications, and king Rajeswar Singha built the multistoried brick edifice that survives today, completed around 1752 CE.
The surviving structure rises four storeys, each tier receding from the one below it, and is crowned by a domed chamber at the top. Of the four watchtowers that originally stood at the corners of the palace complex, only two remain visible today. The building is protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, Guwahati Circle, as a monument of national importance.
