The Ajanta Caves are a group of 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments carved into a 76-metre-high horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora river, about 107 km from Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The earliest caves date from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, with a second major phase of excavation during the Vakataka period in the 5th and 6th centuries AD, when many richly decorated caves were added to the original group.
Of the thirty caves, five are chaityagrihas (sanctuaries) and the rest are sangharamas or viharas (monasteries). The site is internationally renowned for its paintings and sculptures, considered masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, depicting Jataka tales and scenes from the life of the Buddha using layered techniques of earth, lime wash, and natural pigments.
The caves were abandoned around the 7th century and lay hidden in the forest until a British officer of the Madras Regiment rediscovered them in 1819 during a hunting expedition. Ajanta was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
