Your Experience

Akbar's Tomb is the mausoleum of the Mughal emperor Akbar, set within a walled garden at Sikandra on the outskirts of Agra. Akbar himself chose the site and began its construction, but the building was completed after his death in 1605 by his son, Emperor Jahangir, between 1605 and 1613.

The five-storey structure is built mainly of deep red sandstone, with the topmost storey executed in white marble and decorated with geometric, floral, and calligraphic panels. This false-domed top pavilion contains a marble cenotaph inscribed with the ninety-nine attributes of Allah. The building's design draws on Hindu, Islamic, Christian, Jain, and Buddhist decorative influences, reflecting Akbar's own policy of religious inclusiveness.

The tomb was damaged and partly looted during unrest in the late 17th century and was later restored, including conservation work carried out under British administration and subsequently by the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains the site today.
