Bhangarh is a ruined 17th-century fortified town in the Aravalli hills of Alwar district, Rajasthan, built by Raja Bhagwant Das for his younger son Madho Singh, brother of the Mughal general Man Singh I who served under Akbar. In its active period it was a substantial settlement with temples, havelis, markets, and palace buildings, entered through four gates: the Lahori, Ajmeri, Phulbari, and Delhi gates.
The site was declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1951. Today it survives as an extensive complex of ruined temples, gateways, and residential structures rather than an intact fort, and is one of the best-known examples of Rajput-era town planning in the region.
Bhangarh is widely known in popular culture for legends describing it as haunted, and the Archaeological Survey of India enforces a strict rule that no visitor may remain inside the complex between sunset and sunrise.
