Established in the early 1970s by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Archaeological Museum in Halebidu is located within the sacred precincts of the Hoysaleshwara Temple complex in the Hassan district of Karnataka. The museum serves as a vital custodian of the artistic and cultural legacy of the 12th and 13th-century Hoysala Empire. It houses more than 1,500 sculptures, stone inscriptions, architectural fragments, and temple relics.
The museum's collection is thoughtfully displayed across a closed indoor sculpture gallery and an open-air section. Notable exhibits include an impressive 18-foot-high image of a Jain Tirthankara recovered from a ruined Jaina basadi, alongside celebrated stone carvings of Govardhanagiridhari Krishna, Nataraja (Dancing Shiva), Veena Saraswati, and a dynamic dancing Ganesha. The museum also features intricate inscriptions in Kannada and Sanskrit that illuminate the socio-political and religious life of medieval Karnataka. It is highly recommended for history buffs, art enthusiasts, and heritage travelers looking to delve deeper into Hoysala craftsmanship.
