The Archaeological Museum at Bodh Gaya was established in 1956 by the Archaeological Survey of India, close to the Mahabodhi Temple complex that marks the site of the Buddha's enlightenment. The museum was created to house and display stone sculpture and antiquities recovered from the Bodh Gaya area, complementing the adjacent UNESCO-listed Mahabodhi Temple Complex.
Its collection, arranged across two galleries and a courtyard, includes Buddhist and Brahmanical stone sculptures largely of the Pala period, along with railing pillars and coping stones bearing Sunga-period reliefs of the Buddhist pantheon and zodiac motifs. The museum offers visitors additional context on the art historical development of the Bodh Gaya region across several centuries of Buddhist patronage.
