The Archaeological Museum in Old Goa is situated within the historic convent portion of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. Established by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1964 and later reorganized in the 1980s, the museum offers a fascinating journey through Goa's rich colonial and pre-colonial past. The exhibits are spread across eight galleries and present a continuous historical record from the early Kadamba dynasty to the end of the Portuguese era.
The museum's collection is renowned for its impressive portrait gallery, featuring paintings of Portuguese viceroys and governors who ruled Goa for over 400 years. Visitors can also view ancient Hindu sculptures of deities like Vishnu and Surya, intricately carved hero and sati stones, ancient coins, and Portuguese weaponry. Prominent centerpieces include a towering bronze statue of Afonso de Albuquerque (the first Portuguese governor of Goa) and a bronze monument of the famous Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões. It is an essential stop for history enthusiasts wanting to understand the cultural and political evolution of Velha Goa.
