The Archaeological Museum at Sanchi was established by Sir John Marshall in 1919 during his tenure as Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India. Owing to a shortage of display space, the collection was later moved to its present building at the foot of Sanchi hill in 1966. The museum today has four galleries and one large central hall.
The exhibits include sculptural artefacts recovered from Sanchi as well as from nearby Buddhist and Hindu sites such as Vidisha, Gyaraspur and Murelkhurd, giving visitors context for the stupas and gateways on the hill above.
