The Ashokan Rock Edicts at Junagadh are inscribed on a large rounded granite boulder situated at the entrance to the valley leading up to Mount Girnar, on the outskirts of Junagadh, Gujarat. Fourteen edicts of Emperor Ashoka, dating to around 257 BC, are carved into the rock in Brahmi script, conveying messages of love, peace, and tolerance addressed to people of any faith.
The edicts were rediscovered by James Tod in 1822. To protect the inscriptions, Nawab Rasool Khan of Junagadh constructed a protective structure around the rock in 1900, which was subsequently repaired in 1939 and 1941 by local rulers.
The Archaeological Survey of India lists the Ashokan Edict Rock as one of four Monuments of National Importance in the Junagadh and Girnar area, alongside the nearby Buddhist cave groups. It remains a significant site for understanding Emperor Ashoka's Buddhist philosophy and moral edicts.
