The Aurangabad Caves comprise twelve rock-cut Buddhist shrines carved into a hill roughly 8 km northwest of Aurangabad city in Maharashtra, dating from around the 6th to 8th centuries AD. Excavated from comparatively soft basalt rock, the caves are grouped into western, eastern, and northern clusters.
Cave 7, known as the Rameshwar Cave, is notable for its pillared hall and carvings of a seated Buddha, while Cave 10 is the only chaitya-griha (prayer hall) in the complex, with a ribbed ceiling and central stupa. Unlike the nearby Ajanta and Ellora caves, the Aurangabad Caves contain few inscriptions, so much of their history is inferred from architectural style.
