Your Experience

The Avantiswami (Awantiswami) Temple is a ruined Hindu temple complex on the banks of the Jhelum River in Awantipora, Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir, about 16 km northeast of Pulwama town. It was built by King Avantivarman of the Utpala dynasty between 853-855 CE, before he ascended the throne, and dedicated to Vishnu under the name 'Avantisvamin.'

During his reign, Avantivarman also built a second temple in Awantipora, 'Avantisvara,' dedicated to Shiva. The site lay within the ancient town of Vishwasara, which served as the capital of Kashmir during his rule. Locally, the ruins are known as Pandav Lari, or 'house of the Pandavas.'

Excavated in the 18th century, the Vishnu temple would once have been a striking structure; today several of its carved pillars still stand amid the ruins. The site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India's Srinagar circle as a Monument of National Importance.
