Bishnupur, in Bankura district of West Bengal, was the capital of the Malla dynasty and flourished as a centre of temple building under a line of Hindu Malla rajas in the 17th and early 18th centuries. The town's terracotta temples, built in brick and laterite, are noted for their curved "chala" roofs derived from Bengali thatched-hut forms and for the dense terracotta panels covering their facades, depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and everyday courtly life. Notable temples in the group include the Shyam Rai (Shyamrai) Temple, the twin-towered Jorbangla Temple, the Rasmancha, and the Madanmohan Temple, established by Malla Raja Durjan Singh Dev in 1694. The Mrinmoyee Temple, the oldest in Bishnupur, is said to date to 997 AD. Most of these ASI-protected temples in Bishnupur can be visited on a single entry ticket. The Temples of Bishnupur have been on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites since 1997.
