The Bhaja Caves are a group of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves located on a hill overlooking Bhaja village, near Lonavala in Pune district. The caves date to around the 2nd century BCE, placing them among the earliest Buddhist cave excavations in the Deccan.
The complex includes a prominent chaityagriha (prayer hall) with an apsidal plan and wooden-style ribbed ceiling carved into rock, along with several viharas (monastic cells) used by resident monks. A group of fourteen stupas at the site, some dedicated to named teachers, is among its most distinctive features.
Bhaja is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance and is studied alongside the nearby Karla Caves as evidence of the flourishing Buddhist monastic and trading network that once linked the Konkan coast to the Deccan plateau via the Bhor Ghat pass.
