Your Experience

The Kanheri Caves are a large group of rock-cut Buddhist monuments cut into a basalt hill within what is now Sanjay Gandhi National Park in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. The caves contain sculptures, relief carvings, paintings and inscriptions dating from roughly the 1st century CE to the 10th century CE, reflecting a long, continuous period of Buddhist monastic activity.

The complex functioned as an important Buddhist learning centre and monastery on the ancient trade routes connecting the western coast to the Deccan interior. Many caves served as viharas (monastic dwellings) while others, including a large chaitya hall, were used for congregational worship. Numerous donative inscriptions found at the site record gifts from monks, traders and local rulers.

Kanheri is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance and remains one of the most extensive rock-cut cave complexes in India, drawing both pilgrims interested in Buddhist heritage and visitors to the surrounding national park.
