Your Experience

The Kondivite Caves, popularly known today as the Mahakali Caves, are a group of 19 rock-cut monuments in the Andheri suburb of Mumbai, excavated over a long span from roughly the 4th century BCE to the 6th century CE. They are arranged in two clusters on the hillside - a smaller group of four caves to the north-west and a larger group of fifteen caves to the south-east.

Most of the caves served as viharas and cells for resident Buddhist monks, while Cave 9 of the south-eastern group is a chaitya (prayer hall) with a chaitya wall styled after Emperor Ashoka's Sudama cave in Bihar, featuring a stupa beneath a hemispherical dome. The largest cave, also numbered 9, contains seven carved depictions of the Buddha and figures from Buddhist mythology, though many of the carvings are now damaged.

The site was formally recognised as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India in 2006, and it is now fenced and monitored to protect it amid the dense urban development that has grown up around it in Andheri.
