Lalitgiri (locally also called Naltigiri) lies between the Parabhadi and Landa hills of the Assia range in Jajpur District, Odisha, about 83 km from Bhubaneswar. It is regarded as the oldest of the Buddhist 'Diamond Triangle' sites in Odisha, alongside Ratnagiri and Udayagiri (Jajpur), with a monastery believed to date to around the 1st century CE.
The site was first identified in 1905 by M. M. Chakravarty, then the Jajpur Sub-Divisional Officer, and was declared a centrally protected monument in 1937. Major excavations carried out by the ASI's Bhubaneswar Circle between 1985 and 1991 uncovered a large hilltop stupa containing nested stone, steatite, silver and gold reliquary caskets; the innermost gold casket held a bone relic believed to be a relic of the Buddha. Evidence at the site points to continuous Buddhist activity from the post-Mauryan period through the 10th-13th century CE.
