Kolhua, roughly 65 km north-west of Patna, is a Buddhist excavation site maintained jointly by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Bihar government as a protected park. Its centrepiece is a polished sandstone Ashokan pillar, about 18.3 metres tall, crowned with a bell-shaped capital and a life-size lion figure, one of the best preserved of the surviving Ashokan pillars in India.
The surrounding excavated remains include a brick stupa and a water tank traditionally associated with events from the final days of the Buddha's life, and the site is closely linked with ancient Vaishali, capital of the Licchavi confederacy and a place the Buddha is recorded to have visited during his last journey.
The site today functions as an open, landscaped archaeological park around the pillar and stupa remains, drawing pilgrims and visitors interested in early Buddhist history.
