Your Experience

Chandragiri Fort stands 14 km south of Tirupati in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. Its name, meaning 'Hill of the Moon', is traditionally linked to a legend of the Moon god's penance at the site; the fort itself is roughly crescent-shaped, which Andhra Pradesh Tourism also cites as a reason for the name. The fortifications, with rectangular bastions and a steep moat, are held to have been built around 1000 AD, and the site later gained importance as a Vijayanagara-era capital.

Within the fort, the two best-preserved structures are the Raja Mahal (King's Palace, which now houses the ASI site museum) and the Rani Mahal (Queen's Palace), along with the ruins of eight temples, including shrines associated with Raja Rajeswari, Venugopala, Kartikeya, Siva and Hanuman.
