Chitradurga Fort, locally known as "Kallina Kote" (Stone Fort) or "Yelu Suttina Kote" (Seven-Circled Fort), is a massive and formidable fortification located in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka. Spanning across a rugged landscape of granite hills, the fort was built and expanded in stages between the 10th and 18th centuries by several dynasties, including the Chalukyas, Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara Empire, and most notably, the Nayakas of Chitradurga, before eventually falling to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.
Renowned for its impregnable military architecture, the fort boasts seven concentric fortification walls, 19 main gateways, 38 posterior entrances, multiple secret passages, and deep trenches. Within its vast and rocky complex, visitors can explore ancient granaries, oil pits, interconnected rainwater harvesting reservoirs designed to withstand long sieges, and 18 historic temples, including the prominent Hidimbeshwara and Sampige Siddeshwara temples. A major highlight for visitors is the 'Onake Obavva Kindi,' a narrow rock crevice where a legendary local woman, Obavva, single-handedly fought off enemy soldiers using only a wooden pestle. The fort offers a thrilling experience for history buffs, trekkers, and architecture enthusiasts alike.
