Chittorgarh Fort, spread over roughly 700 acres atop a hill overlooking the city of Chittorgarh, is the largest fort in India and one of the six forts inscribed by UNESCO in 2013 under the serial listing "Hill Forts of Rajasthan." The fort was the capital of the Mewar kingdom for several centuries and witnessed three major sieges, including those by Alauddin Khilji in 1303 and by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1567-68, events that are central to Rajput narratives of valour and sacrifice.
Within its walls stand a cluster of significant structures, including the Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory) built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, the Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame) dedicated to a Jain saint, the Rani Padmini Palace, Gaumukh Reservoir, and several temples. The fort's seven gates (pols) and long fortified approach illustrate the defensive architecture typical of Mewar hill forts.
As part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan UNESCO inscription, Chittorgarh Fort is recognised for its outstanding representation of Rajput military architecture, showcasing techniques of hill fort construction that evolved between the 8th and 18th centuries.
