Cooch Bihar Palace, also known as the Victor Jubilee Palace, was built in 1887 by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan of the Koch dynasty, reportedly inspired by Buckingham Palace in London. Constructed in an Italianate Renaissance style rather than traditional Rajput or Mughal idioms, the palace reflects the Koch royal family's engagement with European architectural tastes during the late 19th century.
The two-storeyed structure is built around a central Durbar Hall topped by a dome, with numerous rooms that once served ceremonial, residential, and administrative functions for the Koch dynasty, which ruled the Cooch Behar princely state until its accession to India after independence.
The palace is now under the conservation and care of the Archaeological Survey of India and functions as a heritage museum, with much of the interior preserved to showcase the lifestyle and decor of the former royal household.
