Daulatabad Fort, originally known as Devagiri Fort, is a hill fortress located in Daulatabad village near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. It was founded in the 12th century by Bhillama V, the first powerful ruler of the Yadava dynasty, and under successors such as Singhana II it grew into a major political and commercial centre of the Deccan.
In 1327, the Delhi Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq renamed Devagiri as Daulatabad and briefly shifted the capital of the Delhi Sultanate there from Delhi. Over subsequent centuries the fort passed through the hands of the Yadavas, Tughlaqs, Bahmanis, Nizam Shahis, Mughals, and Marathas before coming under the Nizams of Hyderabad.
The fort is known for its formidable defences, including a moat, and structures such as the Chand Minar victory tower. It is a Centrally Protected Monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
