Dindigul Fort was built in 1605 by Muthu Krishnappa Nayakar of the Madurai Nayak dynasty, constructed entirely atop a granite rock hill roughly 270 metres tall with a circumference of about 2.75 km. In the 18th century, the fort passed into the control of the Kingdom of Mysore and was subsequently held by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, for whom it served as a strategically important stronghold. Following the Polygar Wars, the fort came under the control of the British East India Company in 1799. Its solid stone walls, bastions and battlements reflect notable military engineering for the period. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the fort as a protected monument; in 2005 the ASI's Pudukkottai-based team fenced the surrounding area and refurbished several dilapidated sections.
