In the middle of downtown Houston, half a million gallons of water hold an aquarium that behaves less like a museum and more like an adventure. The walk begins in the ruins of a sunken Maya temple, passes through a Louisiana swamp thick with cypress and alligators, and ends among the reefs and wrecks of the Gulf of Mexico.
Two things stay with people. The first is a pair of white tigers, prowling a landscaped habitat in the middle of the complex. The second is the Shark Voyage, a small train that carries you through a clear acrylic tunnel while sharks glide overhead and alongside.
Outside the exhibit halls the site opens into a small amusement area with a Ferris wheel, carousel, drop ride and midway games. The restaurant here is worth a look on its own — its tables sit against a towering reef tank stocked with hundreds of tropical fish."=
