Your Experience

The Durga temple at Aihole, Karnataka, is an early 8th-century temple built by the Badami Chalukya dynasty. Despite its name, it was not originally dedicated to the goddess Durga; epigraphic evidence suggests it was originally a Surya (sun god) temple, and the name derives from a fortification ("durg") later built around it during medieval conflicts between Hindu kingdoms and Islamic sultanates.

The temple is notable for its rare apsidal (horseshoe-shaped) plan, echoing the form of ancient Buddhist chaitya halls, and is considered a mature example of early Chalukyan temple architecture that blends elements of both Nagara and Dravida traditions. It carries some of the most elaborately carved relief panels at Aihole, depicting Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Shakta imagery. The temple stands within a complex that also includes the ASI's Archaeological Museum, Aihole.
