The Ellora Caves consist of 34 monasteries and temples extending over more than 2 km, excavated side by side into the wall of a high basalt cliff near Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The rock-cut activity was carried out in three phases from the 6th to the 12th century, and the ensemble showcases co-existence and religious tolerance through works by followers of Buddhism, Hinduism (Brahmanism), and Jainism.
The earliest caves (1-12) reflect the Mahayana philosophy of Buddhism and were excavated between the 5th and 8th centuries. The Brahmanical group (caves 13-29), including the renowned Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), was excavated between the 7th and 10th centuries. The last phase, between the 9th and 12th centuries, produced the Jaina caves (30-34).
Cave 16, the Kailasa Temple, is the largest rock-cut temple in the world, carved from a single rock downward and dedicated to Lord Shiva; it represents a high point of Indian rock-cut architecture. Ellora was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
