Sahet-Mahet is the archaeological site identified with the ancient city of Shravasti, capital of the Kosala kingdom and one of the most important places associated with the life and teachings of the Buddha, who is said to have spent long periods here. The site takes its name from two adjoining villages: Sahet, corresponding to the Jetavana Monastery grounds, and Mahet, the fortified city area.
Excavations began in 1863 under the British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham, and continued through the 20th century under scholars including Sir John Marshall with Pandit Daya Ram Sahni in 1909-14, and later K.K. Sinha and Lal Chand Singh. Work carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India has uncovered the remains of stupas, temples, and monasteries spanning roughly the Mauryan period in the 3rd century BCE through to the 12th century CE, with the stupas mostly dated to the Kushan period and the temples to the Gupta architectural style.
