The Archaeological Site of Nalanda Mahavihara comprises the excavated remains of a major monastic and scholastic institution in Bihar, with a history spanning from the 3rd century BCE to the 13th century CE. Systematically excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India from the early 20th century onward and conserved in situ, the site includes stupas, shrines, and viharas (residential and educational buildings), along with artworks in stucco, stone, and metal, though only a portion of the historic campus has been uncovered to date.
Nalanda functioned as one of the world's earliest residential universities, drawing students and scholars from across Asia to study Buddhist philosophy, logic, grammar, and other subjects under its resident teachers. In 2016, the "Archaeological Site of Nalanda Mahavihara (Nalanda University) at Nalanda, Bihar" was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its exceptional testimony to the development of Buddhist monastic and educational traditions in the Indian subcontinent.
Today, visitors can walk among the excavated brick monasteries and temple mounds that once formed the heart of this scholastic complex, with the adjoining Archaeological Museum providing further context through sculpture and antiquities recovered on-site.
