Your Experience

The excavated site of Vikramshila lies in Antichak village, roughly 50 km east of Bhagalpur in Bihar, and preserves the remains of Vikramshila Mahavihara, one of the two most important Buddhist monastic universities of early medieval India alongside Nalanda. The university is traditionally said to have been founded by the Pala emperor Dharmapala in the 8th or 9th century CE and flourished as a centre of Buddhist tantric learning until its destruction in the late 12th or early 13th century.

Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India uncovered a large cruciform stupa at the centre of a square monastic complex ringed by cells, along with numerous sculptures, seals, and other antiquities. A site museum, established in 2004 near the ruins, displays stone sculptures of the Buddhist pantheon, including images of the Buddha, Avalokiteshvara, and Bodhisattvas, alongside select Hindu deities recovered from the excavation.

  • Together, the ruins and museum offer one of the clearest physical records of a Pala-era Buddhist university complex in eastern India.
