The Colonna Gallery stands as a true masterpiece of Roman Baroque architecture. Commissioned in the mid-16th century by Cardinal Girolamo I Colonna and his nephew Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, it was officially opened in 1700 by their son Filippo II.
Antonio del Grande initially designed this grand project, which saw completion through the contributions of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Paolo Schor, and Carlo Fontana towards the late 1600s. The Gallery's inception aimed to serve as a majestic hall celebrating the Christian fleet’s victory over the Turks at Lepanto in 1571.
This historical triumph is captured vividly within its frescoes, particularly those adorning the Great Hall by artists like Coli and Gherardi. Meanwhile, the Sala dei Passaggi features an "Allegory of the Battle" from the 18th century, encapsulating Marcantonio II Colonna's pivotal role in Lepanto.
As a testament to its artistic significance, the Gallery houses numerous masterpieces inspired by Tintoretto, Guido Reni, Pietro da Cortona, among others. Its collection is further enriched with antique marbles and frames that exude an enigmatic baroque essence.
The Hall of Passages boasts exquisite caskets made from ebony and ivory, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship in wood and precious stones. Another highlight within the Colonna Gallery is Princess Isabelle's apartment.
This wing traces its origins to the 15th century, echoing influences from Pope Martin V’s residence until 1431. Its frescoes by Pinturicchio transform the Fountain Room into a masterpiece, while Cardinal Borromeo once resided here during the Baroque era's peak in the 1500s.
Artists like Gaspard Dughet and Carlo Cesi later enriched its decoration, alongside treasured works from Brueghel the Elder and Van Wittel. The apartment honors Princess Isabelle Colonna, who lived there until 1984, with her memory preserved through this wing's dedication.
