Gingee Fort, also known as Senji or Jinji, stands at Gingee (originally called Singapuri), a panchayat town in Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu. The fortress is built across three hills: Rajagiri (the king's citadel), Krishnagiri (associated with the queen), and Chandrayandurg (for soldiers), and is regarded as one of the most formidable and difficult-to-capture forts in India, sometimes referred to as the 'Troy of the East'.
Traces of fortification at nearby 'Old Gingee' (Melacherri village, about 4.8 km away) date to around 1200 AD, while the main fort complex is associated with later builders and rulers who successively controlled the site, including Vijayanagara and Maratha-era occupants.
