Your Experience

Gol Gumbaz is the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah, the seventh sultan of the Adil Shahi dynasty that ruled Bijapur (now Vijayapura) from 1489 to 1686. Construction began during Mohammed Adil Shah's reign and continued after his death in 1656. The name derives from "Gol Gummata," meaning round dome.

Standing around 51 metres (about 210 feet) tall, the mausoleum is crowned by one of the largest masonry domes in the world, built without any central supporting pillar, ranking among the largest unsupported domes globally after the dome of St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The interior is renowned for its Whispering Gallery, an acoustic circular corridor around the dome's base where even a whisper reverberates multiple times. The complex also includes flanking minaret-like towers, a mosque, and the remains of a Naqqar Khana (musicians' gallery), which today houses the Archaeological Museum, Vijayapura. Gol Gumbaz has been on UNESCO's tentative list since 2014 as part of the proposed "Monuments and Forts of the Deccan Sultanate."
