Golconda Fort occupies a granite hilltop on the western outskirts of Hyderabad. Originally built in 1143 by the Kakatiya ruler Prataparudra, when the site was known as Mankal, it was progressively fortified by the Bahmani Sultans and later by the Qutb Shahi dynasty between the 14th and 17th centuries. Sultan Quli formally declared independence in 1518, founding the Qutb Shahi dynasty with Golconda as its base, before the capital shifted to nearby Hyderabad. The fort finally fell in 1687 after an eight-month siege by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
Today the fort is a UNESCO Tentative List entry, grouped with the other Qutb Shahi monuments of Hyderabad - Golconda Fort, the Qutb Shahi Tombs and Charminar. The Archaeological Survey of India, Hyderabad Circle, protects and maintains the fort, which also hosts a nightly sound-and-light show.
