Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is located in Panchmahal district, Gujarat, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. It brings together a concentration of largely unexcavated archaeological, historic, and living cultural heritage properties set within an impressive volcanic hill landscape.
Focused on Pavagadh Hill, which rises about 800 metres above the surrounding plains, the park includes prehistoric (chalcolithic) sites, the hill-fortress of an early 14th-century Hindu capital, and the remains of a 15th-century Islamic state capital of Gujarat. UNESCO describes it as the only complete and unchanged Islamic pre-Mughal city, encompassing fortifications, palaces, religious buildings, residential precincts, agricultural structures, and water installations dating from the 8th to 14th centuries.
The Kalikamata Temple atop Pavagadh Hill remains an important living shrine that draws large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year, making the park a rare combination of archaeological monument and active place of worship.
