Your Experience

Mandu, about 42 km southeast of Dhar, was the fortified capital of the Malwa Sultanate and today preserves dozens of palaces, mosques, tombs and gateways spread across its hilltop plateau, of which 61 structures are recognised as monuments of national importance. The 'Group of Monuments' ticket at Mandu covers the royal enclave's principal palace buildings.

Jahaz Mahal ('Ship Palace'), built in the second half of the 15th century under Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji to house the royal household, sits between two artificial tanks and appears to float on water; its architecture blends Afghan, Mughal, Hindu and Mesopotamian elements. Nearby, Hindola Mahal, a T-shaped audience hall dated to the end of the 15th century, takes its name ('Swinging Palace') from the sloping buttresses that support its side walls. Together with other structures in the royal enclave, these buildings illustrate the distinctive Malwa Sultanate style of architecture.
