Gwalior Fort sits atop an isolated sandstone hill overlooking the city of Gwalior and traces its origins to the 5th century AD or earlier, having passed through the hands of the Guptas, Hunas, Pratiharas, Kachhwahas, Tomars, various Pathan rulers, the Mughals, the British and the Marathas. Mughal emperor Babur described it as 'the pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind.'
Within its ramparts stand Man Mandir Palace, Gujari Mahal, Teli ka Mandir, the Sas-Bahu temples, a series of monumental rock-cut Jain sculptures, and several fortified gateways including the Alamgiri, Ganesh, Chaturbhuj and Urwai gates. Since independence, the fort and its monuments have been jointly maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Madhya Pradesh state archaeology department, and the fort was added to UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in February 2024.
