When you visit the Harry S. Truman Little White House, expect a journey through history and relaxation. Originally built in 1890 as quarters for the Naval Base Commander and Paymaster, this iconic site became President William Taft's stopover in 1912 and later hosted Thomas Edison in 1918.
In 1946, it transformed into President Truman’s winter home where he stayed for 175 days. The Little White House is renowned not just as a residence but also as a place of work where significant meetings with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and discussions on the Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine took place.
Truman was known to enjoy Key West’s island lifestyle, spending afternoons in town or fishing with friends. The house is said to have been a place where he mingled with locals and embraced the community spirit.
Daily presentations start every 15-20 minutes, offering insights into this historical landmark. Note that the museum is wheelchair accessible on the main floor only. Your visit will last up to 1 hour, providing ample time to explore its rich history.
