The Nagarjunakonda hill, named after the Buddhist scholar Acharya Nagarjuna, forms an island within the Nagarjunasagar reservoir in Macherla Mandal, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh. Before the valley was submerged by the Nagarjunasagar dam, extensive excavations revealed a major religious and administrative center that flourished from prehistoric to late medieval periods and served as a stronghold of Buddhist Mahayana practice alongside Brahmanical traditions.
Many of the excavated stupas, viharas, temples and secular structures identified across the valley's more than 120 archaeological sites were relocated and reconstructed on the surviving hilltop before the reservoir was formed, allowing visitors to see reassembled Ikshvaku-period Buddhist monuments in their present island setting.
