Getting started

Meet at the JR Kyoto Station Karasuma Exit (OKOSHI Bus/Kyoto Regular Sightseeing Bus platform). Once checked in, board the sightseeing bus and travel toward the scenic Sagano region, where your rail and river adventure begins.

What to expect
  • Your first stop is the iconic Sagano Romantic Train, a 25-minute journey through the Hozugawa Gorge.The route showcases the Hozugawa Gorge's stunning scenery throughout the year.  Multilingual onboard information in English, Chinese, and Korean helps you learn more about the route.

  • After arriving in Kameoka, board a traditional riverboat for an exciting 16km journey down the Hozugawa River to Arashiyama. Expert boatmen steer your boat through gentle rapids as you admire the Hozugawa Gorge's scenic landscapes.

  • Your tour continues with approximately two hours of free time in one of Kyoto's scenic districts. Walk through the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, cross the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, browse local shops, visit nearby temples, or simply soak in the area's tranquil atmosphere. Wear comfortable walking shoes for exploring Arashiyama and the Bamboo Grove. Bring weather-appropriate clothing, as much of the tour takes place outdoors.

Wheelchair users must be accompanied by a companion to assist with transfers during the boat ride. Guests with certain disabilities may require an accompanying caregiver for the river cruise. Guests who are feeling unwell or cannot properly wear the provided life jacket may not join the river cruise.

Children under 5 without a seat may join for free, but those over 80 cm may need to pay the river cruise fee on-site. The Sagano Romantic Train features onboard information in English, Chinese, and Korean.
