In 2017, Hsinchu Zoo launched the "Zoo Regeneration Project" focusing on three core values: animal friendliness, historical preservation, and life education. This initiative has transformed exhibits into cage-free environments, offering animals 1.5 times more space than before. The zoo's commitment to these principles ensures a respectful and enriching experience for both animals and visitors.
The "Elephant Gate," designed by a Japanese architect inspired by the Hagenbeck Zoo in Germany, is one of the zoo’s historical highlights. During renovations, 13 layers of paint were removed to reveal its original blue-green color. This gate not only serves as an entrance but also as a nostalgic landmark for many visitors who cherish childhood memories associated with it.
The "Rainforest Passage" allows children to observe Bengal tiger twins, Liu Fu and Lai Fu, along with their neighbors—an orangutan named Xiong Da and Malayan sun bears Dudu and Winnie the Pooh. This passage offers an immersive experience where visitors can feel as if they are part of the animals' world.
Additionally, the "old-fashioned birdcage" has been transformed into a children's exploration playground with climbing nets and sandpits, encouraging interactive play while learning about avian species.
The "Forest Canteen," designed like an art gallery, offers visitors a chance to enjoy meals amidst nature. With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the antelope habitat, diners can savor their food while observing these graceful animals.
