Murud-Janjira is an island fort standing just off the coastal village of Murud in Raigad district. Built by the Siddis, who held the surrounding coastline as a semi-independent naval power, the fort was renowned for its massive circular bastions and thick fortified walls rising directly from the sea, and it famously withstood repeated attempts at conquest by the Marathas, the Portuguese and other regional powers.
Accessible only by boat from the Rajapuri jetty near Murud, the fort's ramparts, gateways and the ruins of palace structures and cannons within the fort walls speak to its role as one of the most formidable maritime fortifications on India's west coast.
