Jaunpur Fort, also called Shahi Qila or Karar Fort, was built in the 14th century by Ibrahim Naib Barbak, a chieftain of the Delhi Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq, reportedly using material salvaged from earlier Rathore structures. The fort was strengthened and embellished with royal buildings under the independent Sharqi dynasty, only to be reduced to rubble by the Lodis roughly a century later. The Mughal emperors Humayun and Akbar later rebuilt the fort after extensive repairs. Within its irregular quadrangle of stone walls and raised earthworks stand two prominent surviving structures: a mosque dating to 1376, built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq's brother, and a Turkish-style hammam (bathhouse) added in the Mughal period. The fort stands close to the Shahi Bridge on the Gomti River and is today a centrally protected monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
