Kangra Fort was built by the Katoch dynasty, rulers of the ancient Trigarta Kingdom referenced in the Mahabharata, and is counted among the oldest and largest forts in the Himalayan region, spread across roughly 463 acres. Over the centuries, it was besieged or held by a succession of powers including Mahmud of Ghazni, Muhammad bin Tughluq, the Mughal emperor Jahangir and Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire. The British took control of the fort and continued using it until the devastating earthquake of 1905 rendered it uninhabitable. The fort sits at the confluence of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers, about 20 km from Dharamshala, and is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India as one of the most visited heritage sites in Himachal Pradesh.
