Kareng Ghar, together with the underground Talatal Ghar beneath it, forms a seven-storeyed palace complex at Rangpur, near Sivasagar in Assam - four storeys above ground (Kareng Ghar) and three below (Talatal Ghar). Ahom king Rudra Singha founded Rangpur as a new capital in 1698 CE with an initial wooden palace; the present brick-masonry edifice was built by his successor, Rajeswar Singha, between 1751 and 1759 CE, following excavated evidence of burnt wooden logs, post holes, burnt brick structures and pathways from the earlier phase.
The complex served as the seat of the royal court, the central administrative office, and a strategic military headquarters of the Ahom kingdom. Two secret tunnels are associated with the site: one connecting to the Dikhow river and a longer one believed to lead toward Garhgaon, both understood as escape routes in the event of an attack. The monument is protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, Guwahati Circle, as a ticketed monument.
