The Keshava Temple in Somanathapura is a breathtaking masterpiece of Hoysala architecture, recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the "Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas." Built in 1268 CE by Somanatha, a distinguished commander under Hoysala King Narasimha III, the temple is situated near the banks of the Kaveri River in Karnataka. Constructed entirely from soft soapstone, the temple is renowned for its astonishingly intricate carvings and perfect symmetrical design.
It is a Trikuta (three-shrined) temple, standing on a raised, star-shaped walking platform known as a jagati. The three sanctums originally housed idols of Keshava, Janardhana, and Venugopala (forms of Lord Vishnu). The outer walls are entirely covered in continuous horizontal friezes depicting charging elephants, horses, floral motifs, and detailed epic scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana. Featuring polished lathe-turned pillars, finely detailed ceilings, and flawlessly sculpted deities, the Keshava Temple is considered one of the most perfectly preserved and complete examples of Hoysala artistry in India.
