The tomb of Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan, popularly known as Rahim, was built in 1598, reportedly first raised by Rahim for his wife before he himself came to be buried here, making it among the earliest Mughal tombs built in memory of a woman, predating the Taj Mahal by decades. Rahim was one of the navratnas, the nine celebrated courtiers of Emperor Akbar, and is remembered as a statesman, military commander and poet whose verses are still widely quoted.
Standing close to both Humayun's Tomb and the Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, the mausoleum draws clearly on the design of Humayun's Tomb, clad in red sandstone and marble with incised plasterwork and decorative motifs such as six-sided stars and lotus medallions. Architectural innovations first attempted here are considered to have informed the later design of the Taj Mahal.
The tomb has been under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India since 1754. In 2014, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture was asked by the Ministry of Culture to undertake its conservation, working in partnership with the ASI and with co-funding support, restoring much of the structure's decorative stonework.
