The Small Fortress was built in the 18th century by Emperor Joseph II. During the Second World War, it was used by the Gestapo as a police prison, while the town of Terezín served as a Jewish ghetto and concentration camp. Opened in 1994, the Ghetto Museum houses a permanent exhibition focused on the political prison and the persecution of the Czech population under the Nazi regime.
