In the 1840s Kreuzberg was planned around a canal and long squares, with churches closing the views. The canal was filled in the 1920s, the Wall cut through it in 1961, and a 1960s plan meant to clear the district for slabs and a motorway. Most of it survived.
Start on Oranienplatz and follow the old canal through sunken gardens to the Engelbecken, a pond that lay in the death strip, and the Baumhaus an der Mauer, a garden planted in no man's land in 1983. Cross Mariannenplatz to the Bethanien and walk Oranienstrasse and Kottbusser Tor. End on the Landwehrkanal by its oldest surviving wrought-iron bridge and the Fraenkelufer synagogue, facing the Maybachufer market.
Twelve stops, about 3.1 km and 1 hour 30 minutes, at your own pace, in English. Flat and outdoors, with some steps; the walk mentions the Wall and the Holocaust.
